The Trucking Wellness Programme
Through the joint
initiative of donors such as the Swedish
International Development Cooperation Agency
(SIDA), industry, unions and the National
Bargaining Council of the Road Freight
Industry (NBCRFI), there is hope. With the
introduction of the Trucking Wellness
programme, many lives have been saved or
improved and the once endangered trucking
industry can safely weather the devastating
effects of HIV and AIDS.

Trucking Wellness focuses on the provision
of basic clinic services on major routes in
South Africa including across its borders
and is a blend of fixed and mobile clinics.
There are currently 20 fixed clinics across
southern Africa with a target of setting up
3 a year in hot spots.
The programme has realized the importance of
wellness, avoiding the stigmatization that
HIV and AIDS offers in the local
communities. The biggest challenge of the
programme is encouraging commitment of the
affected to regular ARV treatment. These
individuals face rejection by their
communities and often results in patients
discontinuing treatment.
